Stories from the Studio

A life in art, mindfulness, colour, and quiet wonder.

Namaste, I’m Sandhya Manne

Welcome to my world of art, mindfulness, and storytelling.

From my studio by the Bay of Bengal in Injambakkam, Chennai, I create original paintings,

Zentangle-inspired works, and creative experiences that bring beauty, calm, and connection into

everyday life.

My Artistic Journey

Art has always been my quiet adventure.
Growing up in India, creativity was woven into everyday life for me — through vibranthandwoven silk sarees, intricate temple sculptures, painted ceilings, and the quiet poetry of handmade things. As a child, I spent hours lost in colour, copying illustrations from storybooks and newspapers simply for the joy of it.

I began as a self-taught artist, learning through observation, experimentation, and instinct. Though I never followed a formal art education, life became my classroom. Over the years, I was fortunate to learn from generous mentors and master artists during my travels across the world. Each experience shaped my artistic voice and deepened my love for visual storytelling.

Today, my work is a joyful patchwork of these influences — impressionistic in spirit, rich in colour, and rooted in the beauty of everyday life.

A defining moment in my journey came when inspiring women artists encouraged me to step into my confidence and claim my space as an artist. Since 2011, I have exhibited in juried shows across India and the USA. In 2023, I reached a cherished milestone with my first solo exhibition at theiconic Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai.

What Is My Work About

Through meditative art, storytelling, and vibrant colour, I explore ways to gently transform life’s chaos into calm, meaningful expressions. Whether I’m guiding someone through their first Zentangle strokes or creating paintings inspired by travel and lived moments, my intention remains the same—to weave beauty, mindfulness, and connection into everyday life.

I believe art can be both expressive and healing, playful and profound. For me, creativity is not only about making something beautiful, but also about noticing more deeply, feeling more fully, and living more intentionally.

India’s First Certified Zentangle Teacher

I am an artist and a Certified Zentangle Teacher,
and Zentangle has been at the heart of my creative life since 2010.

My own introduction to Zentangle came during a challenging phase of life while living in the USA. With two young children, little support, and a longing to stay connected to my creative self, I attended a four-hour Zentangle workshop that changed everything. The simplicity, calm, and joy of the process gave me instant clarity, confidence, and a deep sense of Zen. I was completely captivated, and I’ve been tangling ever since.

In 2011, I became India’s first Certified Zentangle Teacher. Since then, I have taught thousands of enthusiastic students through schools, private sessions, art associations, community colleges, group classes, international online workshops, and corporate programs. I’ve also had the privilege of working with organizations such as Texas Instruments, Wipro, Danfoss, Target, Marico, Kotak Mahindra, and Asian Paints, introducing Zentangle as a powerful tool for focus, stress relief, and creative well-being.

In 2020, during the global pandemic, I began sharing Zentangle Mini Projects online from home. These simple and accessible projects brought comfort and joy to people around the world, and they inspired me to create deeper learning experiences for students who wanted to grow in their practice with confidence and clarity.

Today, I continue to teach from my studio in Chennai while building vibrant online Zentangle communities across the world — one mindful stroke at a time.

Living an Artful Life

When I’m not splashing colour onto a canvas or creating intricate Zentangles, you’ll often find me wandering through the grand corridors of ancient Hindu temples — sometimes with my husband and children, and sometimes happily on my own. Those quiet moments are my way of slowing down, listening, and gathering inspiration.

I love to travel, whether it is through India’s scenic landscapes or into the awe-inspiring Himalayas. The Valley of Flowers and the sacred journey to Mount Kailash have gifted me deep inspiration and unforgettable stories.

Outside India, I love visiting museums, art galleries, and places rich with history, architecture, and local culture. At home, I find joy in music, long walks, meaningful conversations, books, and having friends over.

I’m deeply drawn to all things traditional and handmade — handwoven sarees, heritage jewellery, crafted mojadis, textures, colours, and stories that carry a sense of memory and place.

For me, art isn’t just what I do. It is how I live.
