As part of the To You Tangle 2025 series, I recently explored a beautiful tangle called Riku—a fun, organic pattern that feels both spontaneous and flowing. There’s a natural rhythm to Riku that makes it an absolute joy to draw, especially when you let it take the lead.
For this tile, I chose to work on a grey background, using pink, black, and white pens. The grey tile gave a lovely, muted base for the tangle to shine, while the pink added a soft pop of colour and the white highlights brought a gentle glow. Working with this limited palette on toned paper added depth and subtle drama to the overall composition.
I chose to use Riku as a monotangle—focusing entirely on this one pattern and letting it grow intuitively across the tile. There’s something deeply meditative about this approach. With no distractions or decisions to make about other tangles, I could simply enjoy the process, one line at a time.
Zentangle encourages us to slow down, connect with the moment, and find joy in simple, deliberate strokes. Riku reminded me of that. It felt like a quiet walk through a wild garden—unexpected, flowing, and full of gentle surprises.
If you haven’t tried Riku yet, I highly recommend playing with it. Let it sprawl, spiral, or softly unfurl—you might be surprised by where it takes you. 💫
