Lately, I’ve been diving into the world of reticulas and fragments—a concept that Zentangle Inc. has been revisiting and exploring in depth. I’ve always loved working with them because they feel like a playground for creativity, especially on days when inspiration feels a little quiet.
Fragments are small patterns, and when placed within a reticula (a grid or framework), they open up endless possibilities. Even with just a couple of fragments repeated across the spaces, something magical happens—the rhythm of strokes begins to build, and suddenly the creative energy starts to flow. It’s such a gentle yet powerful way to slip into the “zone” and reconnect with the meditative joy of tangling.
For my latest tile, I chose to place the fragments at the center of a white square tile, allowing them to form the foundation of the composition. Around this structured core, I added organic tangles that flowed and blossomed outward. The contrast between the geometric fragments and the fluid, nature-inspired forms created a beautiful balance.
This practice reminded me that creativity doesn’t always have to start with grand ideas. Sometimes, it’s the small, structured steps—like reticulas and fragments—that open the door to limitless imagination.
