As India celebrates her 79th Independence Day, my thoughts turn to the symbol that sits quietly at the heart of our national flag — the Ashoka Chakra. Nestled in the center of the white band, this navy-blue wheel with its 24 evenly spaced spokes is much more than a design element. Known as the Dharmachakra or the “wheel of the duties and responsibilities,” it embodies motion, change, and the eternal progress of life.
For this special day, I wanted to explore the Ashoka Chakra. My creation is not a literal reproduction but an inspired interpretation — a Zentangle tile that pays homage to the spirit of the original. I worked on a deep black tile, letting the dark background evoke the weight of history, while vibrant colored pens brought the Chakra’s symmetry and movement to life. Each spoke became a meditative stroke, a quiet reminder that freedom is not static; it’s something we must nurture, protect, and propel forward.
As I drew, I found myself reflecting on the values that wheel represents — justice, progress, and harmony. The steady rhythm of tangling mirrored the continuous turn of the Chakra, reminding me that the work of building a better tomorrow is never done.
This tile leaves me feeling both happy and inspired — a small yet meaningful way to honor our nation’s journey. On this Independence Day, may the wheel of progress keep spinning, and may we all move forward together with purpose. Happy 79th Independence Day !
