If you’ve been following my weekly ZIAs, you may have noticed something about my creative process: I love exploring new tangles. Each week brings an opportunity to take a tangle I haven’t worked with much and see where it can lead me.

This week, I experimented with Stella as the focal point, building the composition from the centre outward. For the first border, I chose ICO, and then came the part I was most excited about—Chaba.

Chaba is such an interesting tangle because it can work beautifully as a standalone pattern, but when you begin playing with repetition and placement, it can transform into something completely different. I wanted to see if I could use it to create a continuous border, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out.

The elements seem to stack almost seamlessly, flowing into one another with a gentle, rhythmic movement. There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching individual strokes come together to create a border that feels almost effortless and continuous.

I’m also still exploring my relationship with colour. This piece naturally led me toward my favourite world of violets and pinks, with just a dash of yellow to add a little contrast and energy. I love how that small touch of yellow brings the composition alive without overpowering the softer palette.

For me, this is what keeps creating ZIAs so exciting. You can begin with a simple intention—a tangle, a border, a colour—and allow the artwork to reveal possibilities you hadn’t anticipated.

And sometimes, the most delightful discoveries happen along the border.
